Beginning of January we have been dealing with Opie’s back pain which I had previously thought was just a muscle pain because the boy is active.
We also were training jumps & A-frames and I couldn’t rule out the possibility of injury on those exercises even though it seemed not likely.
However, beginning of the year he got worse and we went to the vet and took X-rays.
What I thought would be muscle pain & sprains maybe - the vet was thinking of arthritis and/or something in the spine. And possible back surgery might be needed. One vet also said that he might have broken one of his vertebraes 😱
Opie is LTV1 and we could maybe see some changes in the spine from his previous X-rays that were taken 2 years ago. His hips looked great though! 🖤
The pain he had was always in the morning when he got up - which was consistent with the arthritis that they were thinking.
However, the only way to know for sure what was going on - is to do a MRI (about $8k-$10k).
I was able to get a referral to a specialist in Massachusetts and we saw a neurologist & surgeon about 3 weeks ago.
Both of them agreed that at the moment, they didn’t see any signs of pain or anything else that would be alarming.
The specialist didn’t agree with the arthritis diagnosis and also didn’t think this was a spine issue necessarily but couldn’t of course completely rule that out either.
We decided to monitor and put him on medication and if that wouldn’t help - do the MRI to find out more.
He was put on Prednisone beginning of April.
Previously he was already taken medication for pain which we stopped before the Prednisone was started.
Happy to report that he has been coming back to his normal self 💚
He doesn’t seemed to be in pain anymore (not even in the mornings) and his mood is coming back to his happy self ❤️
We hope that this magical Prednisone helped fixed whatever was wrong and that maybe after the summer we can return to training once again.
But most importantly that he can live the active & wild life that he loves so much 💚
